Minicomputers help the disabled to walk
A Data General Nova minicomputer installed at a medical research centre in Valenton, near Paris, is playing its part in helping to restore disabled patients to a normal life. The centre is associated with the Centre de Re-education et d'Appareillage, which specialises in the fitting of artificial lower limbs and the rehabilitation of patients. Some 800 patients pass through the rehabilitation centre each year. The research centre, which is run by the Association for the Development of Reparatory and Orthopaedic Surgery, is equipped to deal with two particular problems: 1. The improvement of the apparatus of the disabled; 2. Diagnosis and supervision of rehabilitation.
It was with these aims in mind that the research centre installed an apparatus for the analysis of a patient's walk, based on measurement of its strength. Out of 50 or so such devices in use throughout the world, that at Valenton is possibly unique in being used for therapeutic purposes.
