Derivatization of primary amino acids with orthophthalaldehyde and B-mercaptoethanol forms derivatives that can be detected by absorbance at 340 rim. These were separated by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A step-or more complex gradient (acetonitrile/phosphate buffer gr
