While in a general sense we can agree with some of the thoughtful points made in the critique, some of the criticisms are directed at issues that were beyond the scope the paper, particularly as reviewers indicated that they thought that the paper would be better presented in the form of a brief descriptive report.
Brief global reference was made to some of the bereavement literature to orient the reader to the issues being examined rather than presenting an exhaustive literature review. The brevity of the introduction does not imply that bereavement is a simple homogeneous phenomena. Items were included in the Perceptions of Bereavement Questionnaire (PBQ) on the basis of extensive reviews undertaken by members of our research team which highlight the complex heterogeneous nature of the bereavement reaction (cf.
