โฆ Synopsis
The compressive strength of SiC whisker-reinforced hot-pressed silicon nitride was characterized over a wide range of strain rate. It was found that the strength of the matrix alone is extremely sensitive to strain rate under impact loading, and that this sensitivity is retained in the reinforced condition, irrespective of whisker orientation. Superimposed on this effect is a peculiar decrease in strength for slightly lower strain rates; it is suggested that the origin of this decrease lies in grain boundary residual tensile stresses.
