โœฆ Synopsis

Resonance fluorescence spectra, obtained by irradiation into vibronic levels of the-first excited singlet state of naphthslene are discussed. These spectra sra compared with the nequilibrated fluorescence" and with a spectrura obtained by irradiation into the second singlet state. Conditions are given which must be considered if concluskxza on single vibronic levels are to be derived from rescnance fluorescence spectra of naphthafene. The phenomenon of resonance fluorescence from benzene vapor has been known for a Long time [lj, Recently Parmenter and Schuyler [2] studied resonance fluorescence originating from different vibronic levels in the 'B2u state of benzene. The aim of our own work was to study the resonance fluorescence of molecules which do not have the high molecular symmetry of benzene. In this paper results obtained from experiments with naphthalene vapor are presented. Further results, concerning toluene, p, m, and o-xylene and aniline will be reported in a more comprehensive paper 133.
