โœฆ Synopsis

Several projects concerning membrane developments and applications supported by various Japanese Ministries will be explained. Interesting membranes, which have been developed in these projects are, pervaporation membranes for alcohol separation, gas separation membranes for hydrogen separation and ultrafiltration membranes for high temperature sterilization.

Membranes applied to various biotechnologies are also explained. One example is in the alcohol fermentation process, where UF is used for recovery of enzymes, RO for concentration of sugar and pervaporation process for recovery of alcohol from fermentation broth. The other example is in the biological effluent treatment process, where UF membranes will be used instead of sedimentation.

Other interesting applications of UF, and new membranes made of porous ceramics and glass will be explained. Finally recent results of our works, including natures of dynamically formed membranes, those of charged ultrafiltration membranes and membrane distillation process, will be reported.

The demand for electric power in Japan tends to increase year by year. In annual demand for electricity, peak demand is concentrated to three months in summer. This unbalance of demand through a year becomes a severe problem. Therefore, electric power storage technology is most necessary. The lithiu

Recent topics related to carbon/ceramic composites in Japan are reviewed. The successful uses of chopped carbon fibers (pitch-based, general-purpose grade) in cladding tile panels for the Al Shaheed monument in Bagdad and in curtain walls of the Ark Hills office building in Tokyo are mentioned. Only
