โœฆ Synopsis

Thank you for your interest in our article "Treatment of Cutaneous Hemangiomas in Preterm Neonatal Twins With Flash Lamp Pulsed Dye Laser." I would like to clarify two points.

First, Dr. Lask states correctly that, prior to our publication, his 6-day-old term infant patient was the youngest to be treated with pulsed dye laser. Our patients were born at the age of 30 gestational weeks and were treated 40 days after delivery, or approximately four weeks before the estimated date of confinement. We believe that our patients are now the youngest to be treated with flash lamp pulsed dye laser.

Second, we share Dr. Lask's enthusiasm for early treatment of hemangiomas; however, lesions in different locations seem to respond differently to laser treatment. In our patients, lesions that were located on the shoulder and hip responded to laser treatment, whereas the nasal hemangioma continued to grow despite laser treatment. It is in reference to these seemingly unresponsive hemangiomas that we conclude that more prospective trials are needed.

The comments are greatly appreciated. The Lancer Ethnicity Scale (LES) was developed for the purpose of more accurately selecting the proper candidates for dermatologic laser therapy. The Fitzpatrick Skin Types were developed for purposes of evaluating the patient's potential responses to UVA and UV
