โœฆ Synopsis

GM:ganglioside (ll3NeuAcGgOs%Cer) is a minor component of adult nervous tissue, but is probably an oncofetal antigen. Its biological role is unknown, but several lines of evidence indicate its potential role in cell adhesion both in the retina and in oligodendrocytes. The biosynthesis of GM:ganglioside appears to be tightly regulated, since it is a key intermediate in complex ganglioside synthesis. The specific GM3: hexosaminyl-transferase is activated under conditions which activate cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase, and cell transformation with retroviruses inactivates it. Catabolism of GM: requires the concerted action of three gene products (a-chain, ~3-chain and activator protein in a thermolabile a t32 AP complex referred to as HexA). Defects in either three components results in the neuronal storage of GM2 ganglioside and the manifestations of Tay-Sachs Disease in children or motor neuron disease in adults.

Ganglioside GM1 3H-labelled at the terminal galactose was added to astrocyte cell cultures. GM1 incorporation was studied in the two typical forms of astrocytes in cell culture of flat and stellate morphology. There was a strong time- and concentration-dependent increase in GM1 incorporation for bot

Ganglioside GM2 is expressed on the surface of neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cells, and may also be detected on lung cancer cells. We reported previously that anti-ganglioside GM2 antibody exhibited strong in vitro anti-tumor activity against adriamycin-resistant cancer cells, which overexpressed g

There are gaps in what is known about the metabolism of some mammalian small RNA species. Our present observations can be summarized as follows. The level of radiolabeled mature U1 KNA doubled between 2 and 24 hr of label chase, while that of all other small RNA species tested did not change. These

## Abstract An ultradian oscillation of protein synthesis was detected by synchronization of metabolic activity in rat hepatocyte cultures. This oscillation occurs in dense cultures in fresh medium, but not in sparse ones. Metabolic synchronization of sparse cultures, however, was initiated by cond
