## Abstract Reduced oxygen tension (hypoxia) in the environment stimulates oxygen‐sensitive cells in the carotid body (CB). Upon exposure to hypoxia, the CB immediately triggers a reflexive physiological response, thereby increasing respiration. Adaptation to hypoxia involves changes in the express
