in a fetus in utero, which spontaneously regressed and was absent at birth (Kerr Wilson et al., 1985). However, in our case, the infant showed an abnormal tracheo-bronchial tree as well as pulmonary lymphangiectasia. The abnormalities seen in this infant were not compatible with life, despite in utero intervention immediately after diagnosis and ECMO treatment after birth.

Case-control studies in the Caucasian population showed that maternal serum inhibin-A is elevated in Down syndrome pregnancies and may be a useful second-trimester marker in addition to human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Data in the Asian population are lacking. We meas
To assess the effect of smoking on maternal serum, second-trimester inhibin A levels, we studied a database of 1277 women undergoing antenatal serum screening. There were 75 smokers, 1008 non-smokers and 194 women in whom smoking status was undetermined. All groups were matched for age, gestation an
To assess the value of inhibin A as an additional second-trimester maternal serum marker of Down's syndrome we studied 56 affected and 280 unaffected pregnancies matched for gestational age. The median level in the cases was 1.62 multiples of the gestation-specific median (MOM) in the controls, with
Maternal serum inhibin-A concentration is a useful marker in prenatal screening for Down syndrome in the second trimester. We measured inhibin-A concentrations in 4304 pregnancies without Down syndrome between 14 and 22 weeks of pregnancy to determine the median values according to gestational age.
