✦ Synopsis
The indolic ring system is quite activated towards electrophilic substitution but it also undergoes undesirable oxidations and oligomerizations readily. The nitration of indoles, even those substituted with withdrawing groups ~ such as -CN, COOR, NO2, COH2or COR, leads to poor yields of the desired nitro products, probably due to the undesirable reactions mentioned above.
