✦ Synopsis

At the beginning of May 2004, Basell inaugurated its new polybutene-1 plant in Moerdijk, The Netherlands. With a capacity of 45,000 tonne/y, the plant is the world's largest. The company expects double-digit growth in demand for the polymer, with Asia/Pacific in particular offering good sales opportunities. Global demand is currently 30,000 tonne/y, with Basell supplying around 80%. The plant uses a special catalyst system that delivers a much higher yield and reduces unproductive side reactions. The use of a double reactor increases flexibility enormously. The end result is a polybutene-1 with clearly better properties.

New types of solid acid (catalysts HaPOa-BF,-H2SOI supported on Si02 and ZrO, were prepared. They showed high activity, selectivity and stability for the alkylation of isobutane with butenes. The nature of the active sites on the new catalysts was discussed on the basis of the characterizations by I
