A method of estimating the refractive index distribution is suggested from the height gain profile of the received electric field strength which is generated due to the inverted atmosphere as a surface-based duct or an elevated duct. First, an initial value of the refractive index distribution is gi

โฆ Synopsis
A reconstruction algorithm for determining the complex refractiยจe index of the object from measurements of the intensity of the total field is presented. The algorithm is based on an optimization procedure. The simulated results show that the algorithm is ยจery effectiยจe in reconstructing refractiยจe index distributions to which the first-order Born approximation cannot be applied.
