✦ Synopsis


A novel experimental technique for the measurement of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient, n 2 , based on the detection of self-phase modulation phase shift by means of an all-fiber Sagnac interferometer, is proposed. Measurements performed on dispersion-shifted fibers clearly indicate that the value of n 2 at 1550 nm is around 2.5 Γ— 10 -20 m 2 /W, considerably lower than in the visible wavelength range.
