✦ Synopsis

PROBLEM

As part of a recent study, T01or(~) compared the ability of three groups of patients t o recall the Bender-Gestalt designs. After making an adjustment for the effects of intelligence, he found significant differences in recall between organic patients without convulsive disorders, organics with convulsive disorders and patients with primarily non-psychotic psychogenic disorders. Both the patients with psychogenic disorders and the convulsives were superior to the organic, nonconvulsive group in memory for the designs. The purpose of the present study was t o determine whether patients with severe psychogenic disorders, that is, schizophrenia, could be differentiated from a group of organic patients in their ability to recall the Bender-Gestalt designs. I n addition, this research served t o check some of Tolor's findings with an independent group of organic patients.

'The authors are indebted to Miss Louise Hewson, Director, Department of Psychology, Neurological Tnstitute, New York, for her cooperation and he'pful suggestions with regard to this project. They also wish to thank Dr. Alexander Tolor, for providing the authors with his material on the recall of Bender-Gestalt designs.
