Abstract
The homolytic cleavage of 11‐hypoiodites of 3‐oxo‐11α‐hydroxy‐steroids, generated from the corresponding hydroxy compounds by treatment with lead tetraacetate and iodine, has been investigated. The main reaction products are enol ethers containing the 3‐oxo‐1, 11α‐oxido‐Δ^1^‐grouping.

Lead tetraactate treatment of 11α‐hydroxy steroids results in the formation of 1, 11α‐oxido derivatives in high yields. The configuration at C‐1 in these novel compounds is shown to depend significantly on the structure of rings A and B of their progenitors.
