No story is the inevitable product of the event it reports; no event dictates its own narrative form. News occurs at the conjunction of events and texts, and while events create the story, the story also creates the event. News reports play a large role in our lives. Of the many events that occur on a particular day, however, only a few will be reported and become part of 'the news' . How events become news, and which events are chosen, has long been a fascinating subject.

Stories of crimes and deviant behaviours provide a significant part of the news: one study of newspapers in Melbourne, Austrafia, for example, found that 20 per cent of news coverage concerned such behaviours . The issues of crime and criminal justice attract so much media attention, according to , because such reporting is full of drama, involves life and property, and the frightening power to deprive a person of liberty. Crime news will always be 'prime news' ' although suggest that media coverage of crime in Australia at least, has in fact declined.

While many journalists continue to assert that they merely reflect society's views, they are clearly far more powerful than such statements indicate . Others argue that journalists also play a major role in constructing what is 'deviant' in our society and, therefore, what is not 'deviant' but 'normal' .
