โœฆ Synopsis

Rate constants at room temperature for the reactions of oxygen with Sn~ (n= 1-9) and Pb~-(n= 1-7) cluster anions are reported from flow-tube reactor kinetics measurements. A large variation in reactivity for different cluster sizes is observed, with reaction efficiencies ranging from 2% to 30% of the collision rate. The major primary anionic reaction products are small metal oxides containing one, two, or three metal atoms, indicating an etching type process. No oxide product anions are observed with more than three lead atoms or more than five tin atoms.

An investigation of the gas-phase reactions of molecular oxygen with the molecular anions of 17 compounds formed by resonance electron capture was undertaken using a pulsed e-beam high-pressure mass spectrometer. The molecular anions of sulphur hexafluoride, perfluromethylcyclohexane, cis-and trans-
