In contrast to the reactions of pyridine with diethylmagnesium or ethyllithium alone, which lead only to 1,2-addition, reactions with diethylmagnesium-ethyllithium solutions lead to significant amounts of 1,4-addition; magnesium ate species are proposed to be responsible.
