It is concluded that C3H80+' formed by dissociation of ionized 2ethoxyethanol ( ) is a mixture of CH,CH,OCHl' (7) and 'GH,+OHCH,CH, (2). Formation of 7 and CH3CH2+0HCH3 ( ) is attributed to dissociations of species formed by the hydrogen transfers [ CH,CH20CH2+ 'CH,OHI + [CH,CH,OCHi' CH,Ol -+ [CH,CH

β¦ Synopsis
Methanol exchanges its hydroxyl hydrogen with deuterium in ionized propene during the formation of protonated methanol. This exchange is attributed to the interconversion ICH,CH=CHZ' HOCH, + I CH,'CHCH, +H20CH,j in single collisions. The exchange in this ion-molecule reaction is analogous to that observed in the formation of protonated methanol from ionized 2-methylpropanol, supporting the intermediacy of ion-neutral complexes in the final step of the latter reaction. Ion-molecule reactions were studied using a Fourier transform mass spectrometer. 'OCH,], still involve complexes and are thermochemically less likely (estimated4 AH,(d) = 718 kJ mol-', AH,-(e) = 688 kJ mol-' and AHf([CH,+CHCH3 'OCH,] = 755 kJ mol-'): d e (iii) H transfer converting a to its distonic isomer b occurs, but irreversibly; the only detectable reaction CCC 0030-493X/94/080428-04 0 1994 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
