✦ Synopsis

Dilute mixtures of 4-methyl-1 -pentyne have been pyrolyzed in a single-pulse shock tube. The decomposition process involves bond breaking : kn HC=C--CH2(i-C3H7) --+ HC=zC-<:H2.(propyny1) + i-C,H,as nr1I as a molecular reaction: HC=C-CH,(i-C,H,) % C,H4(allene) + C,H, . The rate parameters are: k B -k 31 --1013.1 exp (-29,67O/T) (sec-l) exp (-34,94O/T) (sec-') 1 100°K, 1.5-5 atm l'he heat offormation of propynyl radical is thus AHf3,,,, = 338 kJ mol-l (80.7 kcal mol-l).

'This leads to a propynyl resonance energy of 40 kJ mol-' (9.6 kcal mol-I).

## Abstract This investigation presents a detailed examination of the relative reliability of the comparative and absolute rate methods as they are applied to kinetic studies in the single‐pulse shock tube. For this purpose two previously studied reactions, the thermal elimination of HCl from ethyl
