a new section of the journal, thus implementing the decision to separate Technical Communiques and Correspondence items. The new section for Technical Communiques was expected to accomplish two objectives. First, to provide a suitable forum for the presentation of brief articles containing useful ideas, pertinent comments or conjectures of a technical nature and second, to provide appropriate recognition to the contributions of the authors involved. The section for Correspondence was expected to include what might be called letters to the Editor; that is brief notes correcting or criticizing a previously published article. Correspondence items could also include a large variety of other brief articles related to the control of systems in the broadest sense.

In order to encourage the submission of Technical Communiques and Correspondence articles and to provide the authors and readers with more efficient service, the Automatica Editorial Board decided that an Automatica Editor, Technical Communiques and Correspondence, should be appointed. This was done, and Dr. Alexander Levis was the first to hold this position. After five years of dedicated and excellent service, Dr. Levis has resigned. We are very grateful for the work he has done in establishing this editorial position, for the high standards he has set for the quality of the published articles and for the prompt service he has provided.
