✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Raman spectra of the liquid crystal PPU [p‐(p‐ethoxyphenylazo)‐phenyl undecylenate] have been measured as a function of temperature covering all phases. A pronounced hysteresis which involves a new state has been observed during the crystalline‐nematic transition. The Raman intensities in the nematic phase show a temperature dependence in the presence of an external magnetic field.

## Abstract Light scattering from electrically small nematic liquid crystal droplets is routinely studied by methods based on the Rayleigh–Gans (RG) approximation. The error introduced by the Rayleigh–Gans approximation is critically assessed for radial, bipolar, and aligned spherical droplets. Com
