Thapsigargin ( 1 ) selectively labelled in the butyrate moiety of the molecule was isolated after hydridocarbonyltris(triphenylphosphine)rhodium(I) catalyzed reduction of the product I 5 1 obtained by reacting debutanoylthapsigargin ( 2 ) with 3-butenoic anhydride. The use of tritium gas as a reducing agent afforded labelled thapsigargin with a specific activity of 78 Ci/mmol.
