β¦ Synopsis
Photolytic homolysis of the alkyl cobalt 'salophens' (lo), (205) and (20b) in the presence of radical trapping agents e.g. 02, TEMPO, NO, S02, PhSSPh, PhSeSePh, MeS02C1, BrCC13 and 12, leading to oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur, selenium and halogen functionalised products, is used to demonstrate the versatility of cobaltmediated radical reactions in synthesis.
