✦ Synopsis

The reaction of 7-ehloro-l-eyelopropyl-6-fluoro-4-oxo-l,2-dihydroquinoline-3earboxylie acid with piperazine in water was studied. The product eiprofloxacin was isolated and the impurity formed in the reaction was isolated and characterized as 1-cyelopropyl-7-chloro-6piperazinyl-4-oxo-l,2-dihydroquinoline-3-carboxylic acid. Similarly norfloxacin was also synthesired.
