✦ Synopsis
A new analysis method for the quantitative determination of triethanolamine (TEA) in the aqueous phase of cements was developed. TEA was converted into the TEA-Fe 3+ complex by treating it with IM NaOH and 10% Fe 3+ solutions. This method was based on the determination of the TEA-Fe 3+ complex by polarographic techniques. The TEA content in the aqueous phase of the tricalcium aluminate-gypsum system was analysed using the analysis method and the amount of TEA adsorbed was found to be ~l.5mg per g of the solid phase.

This report describes our efforts to analyze cement pastes for triethanolamine. This analysis can be efficiently accomplished after short hydration times (ca. 3 min. ) by gas chromatography or infrared spectroscopy. Only trace amounts of the amine are detected, however, after 24 hours of hydration.
