The authors quote us (I) as saying the fume we examined was an effective pozzolan; they then suggest on the basis of their x-ray diffraction results that the presence or absence of calcium hydroxide in their mixtures showed the fumes they examined to have low pozzolanic activity.

✦ Synopsis
Puzzolanic i.e. calcium hydroxide binding property of two samples of silica-fumes has been investigated. To study their puzzolanic activity they were mixed with Portland cements in various proportions. These mixes were used either to make pastes or a concrete mix. The presence of calcium hydroxide in these samples was used as an index of puzzolanic activity. The results show that the puzzolanic activity of these fume samples were not very high.
