We present a theoretical analysis and experimental results for the most suitable configuration of pump power in a two-stage erbium-dopedfiber amplifier. The amplifiers are arranged in a copropagating pump scheme and use large signal input and modest pump power. Experimental results are in good agree

the validity of PO models, and it is simple because it uses analytical expressions to approximate the diffraction terms. It is extremely suited to be combined with existing models based on an infinite layer structure assumption. The only parameters needed to implement our model are the amplitudes of the expansion waves. The model does not need any correction in the case of multilayered structures because the layered structure is intrinsically described by the expansion waves. The diffraction terms in all cases are analytical. The EWC was at first introduced to calculate the mutual coupling between radiating elements in planar arrays. We have applied it for the first time to a 2-D case. Our formulation is very general. The same formulation can be applied in the 3-D diffraction case. The differences will appear only in the EWC approximation and the far-field expression. This step opens a simple way to model planar antennas on finite substrates. Although a PO model is an approximation, it gives satisfactory results in many cases. This makes the practical application area of our method very large.
