✦ Synopsis

Silicon wafers are bent by loading along two lines at each of two parallel edges to produce elastic strain gradients for the purpose of enhancing neutron reflectivity. The experiments show large differences in reflectivity from different portions of the crystals and for different planes of reflection. The measured radii of curvature show that the strain gradients are not homogeneous. Elasticity theory is used to explain this and the dynamical theory of neutron propagation is used to explain the observed intensities.
