## Abstract Measurements have been made of the linear rate of the self‐propagating reaction and of the heat of this reaction in compressed binary solid mixtures of an oxidizing and a reducing agent. The thermochemical results have been used to draw conclusions about the chemistry of the reactions i

✦ Synopsis
Diflkion coM~~Ued rates of exothennic condensed phase reactions are examined with rewt 10 prtrc d@ reaction parameters. heat and mass diffwivities. particle size, and heat of reaction. A timpk, 6ttdytkd model &&es the reaction rates to thermochemical properties of the mixtures. Computer calculations using linear geometry give the temperature and the extent of reaction iu a function of dig tance from the ignition sow% The emphasis in this paper is placed on the study of propagation gate although the model can be applied to other aspects of exothermic condensed phase reactions such as igniitlon time and energies and geometrical configuration. An explicit expression relating propagation rate to mixture charac:crktic~ is derived by a simplified treatment and fitted to numerical results. In this form. the model is a usetbl tool for the study of rate and system design such as those encountered in them&e and intennetallic pyrotechnic devices, and powder metaUurgical prowares.
