Because of the strong interaction with diol moieties, boric acid plays a critical role in the design of saccharide sensors.
We present an overview about the development of saccharide sensors based on various mechanisms, including spectroscopies, pH indicators, and electrochemistry. The chemistry involved in the binding between boric acid and saccharides is also described.
Furthermore, potential directions of future research for these boric acid based saccharide sensors are discussed.
