✦ Synopsis
The reaction of trinuclear MO(N), incomplete cuboidal complexes [Mo,S,(H,O),]~+, [Mo,OS,(H,O),]~+ and Fro,W,W,W4+ with BH.,-in aqueous HCl solutions results in the conversion of core ligands A-S to h-0. In combination with Dowex cation-exchange chromatography the procedure can be used on a preparative scale. Treatment of [Mo~O$(H~O),]~+ with BH,-results in loss of the trinuclear structure rather than 113-S' h-0 replacement. The reaction of BH,-with [Mo&(H,O),,]~' gives quantitative reduction to [Mo4S,(Hz0),J4+. From these studies it is possible to better understand preparative procedures for conversion of di-p-sulfido MO(V), to cuboidal Mo,S, and trinuclear Mo(IV), incomplete cuboidal [Mo,0,S4_,(H,0).J4+ complexes. Similar reactivity of the W analogue [W,S,(H,O),]" with BI&-is observed.
