✦ Synopsis

The technique of DNA profiling has been described widely in the literature, and a method is described here for evaluating the strength of such evidence in a forensic transfer case. A DNA profile from a stain left at a crime scene contains a number of bands which match bands in a profile from a sample provided by a suspect. In many cases, because of the condition and quantity of material in the crime stain, the crime profile exhibits fewer bands than would be seen in a profile from a good sample. The analysis is sufficiently general to deal with such cases.
