✦ Synopsis

Abstract

A compact and simple design of a printed monopole antenna on a thin substrate for ultra‐wideband applications is presented. The antenna size is 30 × 36 × 0.4 mm^3^ and operates over an extremely wide band of 2.82–13.60 GHz. The proposed design consists of a coplanar radiator and a ground plane on a thin FR‐4 substrate. The advantages of the proposed antenna are its low cost, compact size, thin substrate, and simple design. The measured impedance bandwidth defined by voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) ≤2 of 10.78 GHz (2.82–13.60 GHz) is obtained. Moreover, omnidirectional radiation patterns with appreciable gain across the operating band can be obtained. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
