✦ Synopsis

A document No.2764, describing the c.a.d, of printed circuit boards has been issued by the Royal Radar Establishment, Malvern. The authors, D. A. H. Brown and A. H. James, first used Lee's algorithm for routeing. Advantages of this method are that if a path exists through the maze, the algorithm will find it, and if more than one path exists it will find the shortest one. The physical layout of the board is unimportant and i.e. packages or discrete components may be used.

Disadvantages are that the storage requirements can be very large and runtimes very long because of the exhaustive cellular search technique used. Connections made early in the wiring procedure can completely obstruct later attempts. Consequently, any boards that the program fails to complete may also be impossible to finish manually.

An improvement was made by restricting the area of search and using a three-dimensional model. One application was to a board with 25 dilics using 25k of store and taking 4 hours to run on an ICL 4130. Completion by hand required major modifications to the existing wiring and so this approach was abandoned.

A partial-element circuit model for meander line inductors printed on circuit boards is proposed and its relation with the physical layout is derived. A procedure for the design is presented allowing to obtain inductances between 8 and 50 nH in the range from 30 to 1000 MHz with a 5% mean error.

## Abstract Three different dual‐axis quadrupole gradient coils for quantitative high resolution MR imaging of small animals, phantoms and specimens were designed and built using printed circuit board technology. Numerical optimization of the conductor positions was used to increase the volume of 0
