β¦ Synopsis
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic syndrome of unknown etiology commonly associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and characterized by fibrosing inflammatory destruction of intra-and/or extrahepatic biliary ducts. 1 Although the course may be variable from one patient to another, PSC is often progressive, leading to biliary cirrhosis and its complications. 2 Along with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), PSC constitutes one of the most common chronic cholestatic liver diseases in adults, but unlike PBC, effective medical therapy is not yet available. Currently, liver transplantation is the only life-extending therapeutic alternative for patients with end-stage PSC.
