โœฆ Synopsis


A case of four simultaneously occurring primary carcinomas is presented. A squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus with tracheoesophageal fistula was responsible for the patient's death; multiple small bowel carcinoid tumors, an adenocarcinoma of the colon and an adenocarcinoma of the prostate were found at autopsy. Each showed characteristics of invasiveness.

in recent years, there has been an increase in the reported occurrences of two or more primary carcinomas in one same patient, In 3771 autopsies Cameron et a1.l found 45 cases of two or more primary carcinomas, including one case of triple and one of quadruple primary malignancies. Gracey,3 Hankins,4 Schapirae and Warren,7 among others, have reported four primary tumors; Hornbak5 reported a case with five primaries and Ettinger2 had a patient with six primary malignancies. Werthamer,s while presenting a case of four carcinomas in one patient, proposed the criteria for multiple primary malignancies:
