✦ Synopsis

Southern blot analyses of surgical specimens of cervical carcinoma from Japanese patients showed that 3/9 samples contained human papillomavirus (HPV) type-I6 DNA sequences, and 2 contained HPV type-I6 DNA sequences. By Northern blot analyses, RNA transcripts of HPV DNA sequences were demonstrated in some of the tissues containing HPV type-I6 or HPV type-I8 DNA sequences. Two cell lines established from cervical cancers of Japanese patients also contained HPV type-I6 genomes and these cell lines contained HPV type-I8 transcripts. Two other cervical cancer cell lines from a Japanese patient were found to contain HPV type-I6 DNA sequences and their RNA transcripts.

Certain human papillomaviruses (HPV), mainly types 16 and 18, have been widely recognized as an essential etiologic factor for the development of carcinoma of the uterine cervix. ## Abstract Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is associated with cervical cancer. The E2 and E1 papillomavirus proteins are expressed at the early stage of infection and regulate DNA replication. The E2 protein activates and represses transcription from different HPVs promoters. At some stage wh

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) have been recognized as an essential pathogenic factor in anogenital cancer. HPV DNA has also been found in a subgroup of head-and-neck squamous-cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), and a causative role of the virus in the development of these tumors has been suggested by the conc
