Splitting of the monomer bands was also observed; it is attributed to cis-trans-isomerism; the band of shorter wavelength is assigned to the all-trans-form, that of longer wavelength to a mono-cis-isomer that arises by rotation around the C-2/C-8 bond

β¦ Synopsis
The behavior of [16]annulene on being warmed and on UV irradiation can be coordinated and understood on the basis of the Woodward-Hoffmann rule [91. hv Structure ( I ) shows great conformational mobility [I].
Equilibration of (1) with ( l a ) is immediately understandable. The electrocyclic reactions of the two cisoid triene systems of ( l a ) are disrotatory in the thermal reaction and conrotatory in the photochemical reaction. The molecule undergoes two electrocyclic reactions in going from ( I n ) to (6c) or from ( l a ) to (6e), and there are two possibilities for the second step: it can be in the same or in the opposite sense relative to the first. The opposing sense is dominant. However, we cannot yet decide whether the electrocyclic reactions of [16]annulene induced thermally or photochemically are synchronous or asynchronous.
