✦ Synopsis


The preparations of chlorinated and brominated polyphenylacetylene are reported. Elemental analyses show 28.9% chlorine and 25.4% bromine in the halogenated derivatives. The structures of the halogenated polymers have been studied by u.v., i.r: and H-NMR. The reactions of halogens with conjugated double bonds follow mainly the conjugated addition route; it has been found that some double bonds remain unreacted and isolated between halogenated units. The final halogenated polyphenylacetylene can be regarded as a random copolymer, poly(1,2 dichloro-(or dibromo)-styrene)-copoly(phenylacetylene).
