A new hydrated phosphate of magnesium with a layered structure was prepared hydrothermally under mild conditions. Provided it is not heated beyond \(200^{\circ} \mathrm{C}\), this solid undergoes reversible dehydrationrehydration with the layered structure remaining intact. The as-prepared precursor
