The subunit of DNA polymerase III, the main replicative polymerase of Escherichia coli, has been examined by circular dichroism and by NMR spectroscopy. The polymerase core consists of three subunits: ␣, ⑀, and , with ␣ possessing the polymerase activity, ⑀ functioning as a proofreading exonuclease,
