✦ Synopsis

This review discusses current methods for pregnancy screening and the prenatal diagnosis of fetal Down syndrome. These include maternal serum screening ultrasonographic evaluations, and standard prenatal diagnostic techniques. In addition t o noting the advantages and limitations of these methods, attention is directed to innovative prenatal diagnostic techniques that are not yet clini- cally available, such as the extraction of fetal cells from the maternal circulation and the preimplantation genetic diagnosis for fetal aneuploidies.

## Abstract ## BACKGROUND The impact of prenatal diagnosis on the live birth prevalence of Down syndrome (trisomy 21) has been described. This study examines the prevalence of Down syndrome before (1990–1993) and after inclusion of prenatally diagnosed cases (1994–1999) in a population‐based regis

To assess the influence of in vitro fertilization (IVF) on maternal serum human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), the maternal serum hCG and AFP values were studied in 67 IVF pregnancies and compared with the results of a control group of 4732 spontaneously conceiving patien

We describe the detection of congenital long QT syndrome in a fetus at 37 weeks' gestation using magnetocardiography (MCG). The prenatal diagnosis was confirmed by standard electrocardiography (ECG) performed after birth. This is the first case report of fetal long QT syndrome detected by MCG. Fetal

To investigate whether statistical parameters used in Down syndrome screening between 15 and 22 weeks of pregnancy can be used at 14 weeks, we assayed alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), unconjugated oestriol (uE 3 ), total human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG), free -hCG, free -hCG, and inhibin-A in 16 pregnanc
