Abstract
Polarographic, potentiometric and ESR investigations of alkaline solutions ox sodium dithionite show that the magnified image radical ion is responsible for the low redoe potential of these solutions. The cathodic wave in the polarograms is due to tht reduction of this radical to the sulfoxylate ion while the small anodic wave is that of the oxidation of the magnified image radical to sulfite ion. Time‐potential curves of these solutions during airoxidation are explained in terms of the equilibrium between the dithionite ion and the above radical ion.
