✦ Synopsis

Potentiometric titration curves of di-, tetra-and hexavalent hydroquinone-quinone systems containing hydroquinone nuclei linked by substituted phenols and methylene bridges or only by methylene bridges are described for acidic solutions. The redox potentials of divalent single steps in tetravalent systems can be exactly calculated by means of a modified Nemst equation-for hexavalent systems this is possible by an approximation method. The redox potential in hydroquinone-quinone systems is decreased by about 47 f 4 mV per hydroxy-beruyl group substituting the hydroquinone nuclei.

The difference of the redox potentials of divalent single steps in symmetrical built up tetravalent systems with suflicient distance between the hydroquinone nuclei (3-4 C-C bonds) was only slightly greater than 18 mV at 20"C-a value simply explainable by statistical arguments.
