β¦ Synopsis
PoteRtiometric titration, in which carbon black was reduced in aqueous medium with excess NaBH,, and then titrated backwards with 12, showed the presence of two kinds of reducible surface groups on carbon black, i.e. reversibly reducible and irreversibly reducible groups. The former was attributed to quinone groups and the latter to the other structures. The quinone groups were detected in the potential range between -50 and -456 mV (vs N.H.E.) at DH IO. The total amounts of titratable auinone in three commercial carbon black products were 0.91, 0.98 and l.i8 meqlg respectively.
