โฆ Synopsis
pH measurements I have been used for the determination of the c.m.c. (critical micelle concentration) of anionic surfactants, viz., sulphonated phenyl, tolyl and xylyl stearic acids. The use of potentiometry has now been extended to examine cationic surfactants of the quaternary ammonium type. A cell of the type: Ag, AgBr[CTMAB or CPB[KNO3, Agar Bridge[KCl(sat.), Hg2C12, Hg was set up and its suitability for the determination of the c.m.c, and the activity coefficient of cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTMAB) and cetyl pyridinium bromide (CPB) was tested. The results so obtained were compared with those obtained by the conductometric and spectrophotometric methods.
