✦ Synopsis
The effect of solubility of sparingly soluble salts with negligible complex formation with common anions upon potentials of electrodes of the second kind is treated quantitatively. An expression for the electrode potential as a function of the actual solution composition is given and shows good agreement with measurements on the A&A@(s) electrode at chloride concentrations comparable to, and below, the solubility of AgCl. Literature data on the cell Li/LiCl(m& in DMSO)/TlCl(s)/Tl,Hg are corrected for TlCl solubility in DMSO at low LiCl concentrations. ELECTRODES OF the second kind, M/MA(s)/M'A(&,* in solvent S), are basically defined as involving sparingly soluble salts of no or negligible complex formation with their common anion-l As discussed in part I,a at low common-anion electrolyte concentrations, the solubility of the salt cannot be neglected since it has an appreciable effect upon cel1 potentials. Deviations of measured and expected potentials can be calculated if the solubility product of the noncomplexing sparingly soluble electrolyte is available. THE ACTUAL SOLUTION COMPOSITION AND ITS EFFECT UPON ELECTRODE POTENTIALS The effect of solubility upon the actual solution composition is treated quantitatively for the following electrolytes. The sparingly solubIe salt, MA, is dissociated * Manuscript received
