✦ Synopsis

The synthesis and some of the physical-chemical properties of tricopolymers of L-glutamic acid, blysine, and L-alanine are reported here. The molar ratios of the * Amino acid analyses of these polypeptides yielded values within approximately 3.5% of the mole ratios of NCA's incorporated into the polymerization mixture.

The helix-coil transition has been studied by high-resolution NMR for three watersoluble polypeptides. Such systems are better models for protein behavior than those in TFA-CDC13 solvent. An upfield shift of ~7 cps is observed for the a-CH peak of poly(bg1utamic acid) and poly-clysine as the helix c

If the conditions are favorable to aggregation, another maximum, the third in order, is formed on this boundary.

Thermal and charge induced random coil to a-helii transitions of poly-cglutamic acid (PGA) were measured by optical rotatory dispersion in various solvents. The data of PGA in 0.1M NaCl were analyzed by the Zimm-Rice theory. Enthalpy and entropy changes for the coil-to-helix transition in the unioni
